The 4th eI4Africa Thematic Workshop ”High Performance Computing for Public Good” was successfully held in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania on June 3rd, 2014. The workshop was organised under the aegis of the European Commission (EC, DG CONNECT) and in co-location with the Technology Transfer Alliance (TTA) Conference 2014.

This session will focus on the strategic nature of the high-performance computing and will aim to demonstrate that although the path from the present petaflop to the future exaflop era involves numerous complex challenges, the expected benefits far outweigh the costs and the efforts.
According to an article published on Science|Business, in the past decade high performance computing has transformed the practice – and the productivity - of science. Now this analytical power must be opened up to industry, to improve decision-making, spur innovation and boost competitiveness.
Supercomputers may date back to the 1960s, but it is only recently that their vast processing power has begun to be harnessed by industry and commerce, to design safer cars, build quieter aeroplanes, speed up drug discovery, and subdue the volatility of the financial markets.
