eI4Africa boosts the deployment of Public Key Infrastructures in Africa

Using e-Infrastructures, based on the concept of resource sharing across different geographic and organisational boundaries, requires the deployment of Public Key Infrastructures (PKIs) in the countries where the organisations owning the computing and storage resources are located.

Recently, thanks to a special training material developed by Consorzio COMETA, the eI4Africa project has launched a program to deploy Certification Authorities (CAs) in Africa and Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, and Tanzania National Research & Education Networks have enthusiastically joined the initiative.

After less than two months since the start of the program, KENET CA, MAREN CA, ngREN CA, SAGRID CA, and TERNET CA have successfully been deployed and have started to issue X.509 digital certificates that have already been tested on the GILDA t-Infrastructure.

This outstanding result is only the first step towards the official accreditation of the above CAs by EUGridPMA and IGTF.
