EGI launches the Federated Cloud. CHAIN-REDS project acknowledged

The European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) announced yesterday at the EGI Community Forum 2014 in Helsinki the launch of the Federated Cloud – an academic cloud service built to support development and innovation within the European Research Area.

The service has been built to provide EU researchers with a scalable, standard-based cloud platform that they could use in order to manage, disseminate and process their data flexibly, quickly and efficiently. The service supports all fields of research and it has been tailored to the European researchers’ modern IT needs, making sure they benefit fully from the infrastructure. More specifically, the Federated Cloud combines resources and services provided by various public and private partners and offers researchers:

  • Access to advanced compute capabilities for their research;
  • Virtualised resources to run any environment they choose;
  • Support services to ensure applications run as efficiently as possible.

The infrastructure has been designed in collaboration with research communities across Europe, among which the CHAIN-REDS project, to provide requirements for, advise on and test many aspects of the infrastructure. Federico Ruggieri, CHAIN-REDS Project Coordinator, underlines:  ”Our  collaboration  with  EGI  has  been  very   successful.  Their  use  of  open standard is key and  the  interoperability between the  Federated Cloud  and our cloud testbed has opened up many new possibilities for collaborations between researchers from all over the world“.

Other communities involved are the WeNMR project (structural biology), the European Space Agency (satellite image processing), Peachnote (musicology), BioVel (biodiversity) and EISCAT-3D (geospace)

Any European researcher can start using the Federated Cloud today by contacting EGI at  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , or by consulting  the instructions.

CHAIN-REDS is a FP7 project co-funded by the European Commission (DG CONNECT) aiming at promoting and supporting technological and scientific collaboration across different e-Infrastructures established and operated in various continents, in order to define a path towards a global e-Infrastructures ecosystem that will allow Virtual Research Community (VRCs), research groups and even single researchers to access and efficiently use worldwide distributed resources (i.e., computing, storage, data, services, tools, applications). The CHAIN-REDS project brings 10 partners from different regions and countries, namely Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, India, China and Latin America.
